A mysterious gateway to an alternate dimension suddenly appeared overnight on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach with the Upside Down Under.
Stranger Things is turning things ǝpᴉsdn uʍop with giant rifts opening up all over the globe including here in Bondi, which was blanketed by eerie thick fog this morning.
The world’s most famous beach has been taken over by a GIANT rift measuring 20 x 16 metres in size, with branch-like vines protruding from a glowing red centre.
Ever since 1983, when a test subject in a Hawkins, Indiana lab named Eleven ripped open a portal between Hawkins and the Upside Down (a terrifying alternate dimension beneath the surface of this small town), similar rifts have been opening up in the most unexpected places.
Now, they’re officially in Australia. In celebration of the return of Stranger Things, rifts will start appearing here and around the world. The Upside Down will take over landmarks in 14 countries like New York’s Empire State Building; Milan’s Duomo Square; Columbia’s Malecon Barranquilla and the Gateway of India in Mumbai as well as locations in London, Tokyo, Malaysia, Germany, Los Angeles, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Stockholm and Madrid.
Scientists in hazmat suits have been patrolling the Bondi area while lifeguards have set up a safe perimeter around the scene. The rift appeared until 12 noon today in Sydney.
The Stranger Things takeover of Australia continues next week with the arrival of three of the show’s stars. The Hawkins Kids – Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Sadie Sink (Maxine “Max” Mayfield) and Priah Ferguson (Erica Sinclair) – will be in Sydney from June 1-5 to promote the highly-anticipated new season and take part in an exclusive fan event at Luna Park (ticket allocation exhausted).
This will be the only Asia-Pacific stop on the global Stranger Things talent tour.
Gaten Matarazzo said: “It’s so cool that there are Stranger Things fans all over the world, including Australia. The Hawkins crew and their stories have resonated with people everywhere and we can’t wait to meet our fans Down Under!”
Sadie Sink said: “It’s a really loving, amazing, widespread fanbase that continues to grow. Everyone on the show is so fortunate to have such a loyal fanbase. It makes us excited when we’re working to know that there’s so many people who are looking forward to it.”
Priah Ferguson said: “These fans are so loyal! I think they’re passionate because it speaks to everyone in some way. Fans see themselves in these stories and experiences, and I definitely think that if it wasn’t for the fans, Stranger Things wouldn’t be as big as it is.”
The Upside Down has also taken over the Grill’d Galeries restaurant in Sydney CBD from today, with Netflix partnering with them to release a limited edition Demogorgon Burger. Fans will be able to step through the store rift into an immersive world complete with vines, floating spores and interactive experiences. The Demogorgon Burger, delivered exclusively via Grill’d Delivery and Uber Eats, will be available for a limited time at all Grill’d restaurants Australia wide until 16 June 2022.
Today, Netflix – the world’s leading streaming entertainment service– and Grill’d – Australia’s favourite home-grown burger brand – will announce the release of the limited edition Demogorgon Burger. Just when you thought the battle was over something’s turned our grills upside down and unleashed a bloody monster just in time for tonight’s highly anticipated release of Stranger Things 4.
The Demogorgon Burger features grass-fed Australian beef pattie, roasted peppers, dill pickles, and cos lettuce, smothered in backyard burger sauce and sour cream. And to give it extra bite, a dangerously delicious buffalo dipping sauce. Talk about killer flavours.
A rift has opened at the Grill’d Galeries restaurant in Sydney CBD, with a complete takeover, transforming the location into the Upside Down. Fans will be able to step through the rift into an immersive world complete with vines, floating spores and interactive experiences. There is also a national consumer promotion for Relish Members, with the major prize, a trip for two to San Francisco to experience the Stranger Things: The Experience fan exhibit. Hop to it and give it eggo!
Ben Goss, Chief Marketing Officer, Grill’d says: “Every Grill’d burger is made using the freshest all natural ingredients so I guarantee you’ll be rating this Demogorgon burger an eleven out of ten. Netflix and Grill’d partnering on this phenomenal series has been a monster journey. The best way to immerse yourself in the new season is by defeating your very own Demogorgon, alongside the gang from Hawkins.”
Eduardo Mendez, Netflix ANZ Head of Marketing Partnerships, said: “Stranger Things is a global phenomenon which continues to entertain people of all ages. Netflix is thrilled to celebrate the fandom of Stranger Things with Grill’d in Australia. What better way to mark the new season premiere with the release of this epic Demogorgon Burger.”
