Brendan Fraser wanted for new The Mummy sequel

A new rumour suggests Universal Pictures wants the OG Rick O’Connell to return for new instalment

Universal Pictures/Netflix

A legacy sequel to the Stephen Sommers ‘classic’ “The Mummy” may be in the works, with original lead Brendan Fraser rumoured to reprise his role as undead-clashing Rick O’Connell.

The comeback king, currently on “DC’s Doom Patrol”, is said to be tipped to return in a third sequel to the 1999 hit. The year-old actor’s last turn as O’Connell was in ‘s “The Mummy : Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”.

Per a 2019 article in THR, a fourth film in the series, would’ve seen “the O’Connells face off against Aztec mummies in South America with Antonio Banderas playing the villain”. Plans were abandoned in favour of building a new Universal movie monster cinematic universe and redoing “The Mummy” with Tom Cruise in the hero role.

With Cruise’s “Mummy” movie a forgettable sour note on the Universal filmography, and Fraser’s star soaring again, no surprise to hear that the studio might be coaxing the star of the ’90s sensation to star in a revival.

Giant Freakin Robot have the scoop on Fraser being on the studio’s wishlist for a “Mummy 4”. No word on whether his co-stars Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, or Luke Ford (who played son Alex O’Connell in “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”) would be a part of it too but can’t imagine why they wouldn’t be.
