Francis Lawrence’s “Hunger Games” prequel will begin filming early 2022, says Lionsgate.

Motion picture group chairman Joe Drake revealed during the company’s quarterly earnings call with Wall Street analysts (via Deadline) that “The Ballad of Songs and Snakes” will shoot first half of next year for a 2023 or 2024 bow.

Fixing on a young Coriolanus Snow at age 18, it’s based on the book of the same name by Suzanne Collins, who is also an EP on the flick and is on screenplay duties with Michael Arndt.

As far as the studio is concerned, “Ballad” will be a theatrical experience.

“There’s an audience that wants to come back” to theaters, Drake affirmed. “I believe the market’s going to come back. … There’s going to be a strong, robust platform for us to monetize our movies.”
